Applications : Steering Rack

Steering racks transmit power from the steering column to the vehicle's steering mechanism. They consist of a long round shaft with rack teeth cut over roughly 50 percent of the overall length at one end. The rack is engaged by a gear coupled to the steering column. Rotating the gear moves the (non-rotating) steering rack back and forth, actuating steering of the vehicle. Often, the rack portion of the shaft is configured with a "Y" shape to facilitate better guidance of the shaft as it moves back and forth. Heat treating, to achieve desired hardness characteristics, causes these shafts to distort. Straightening is generally done at three points along the length of the rack and two points on the round portion of the shaft.

Our straightening technologies provide manual and fully automated solutions for straightening these parts, including tooling and control algorithms to deal with the unique requirements of "Y" rack straightening (automated systems only).
